POPULAR BIRDWATCHING SITES       

Bird-watching in India can be the experience of a lifetime. There are many wildlife
sanctuaries in India which offer chances to view several exotic species of birds, both native
and migratory. The most famous of these bird-watching havens are the Keoladeo Ghana
National Park in Bharatpur, Corbett National Park, Sunderbans National Park and the
Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary. These sanctuaries are home to both domestic and migratory
birds which come from all over the world and can be seen fishing, nesting and breeding.


BHARATPUR / KEOLADEO NATIONAL PARK
It is located 175 km away from Delhi on the Agra - Jaipur road. The park is declared a
UNESCO World Heritage Site and encompasses an area of  28.7 sq km.  It is one of the
most visited destinations for bird- watchers. Visitors can see more than 330 species of
birds. The park itself is a patchwork of forest, marshy swamps and lakes making it an ideal
habitat for birds . Bird-watchers are thrilled to see migratory birds like Siberian Cranes,
geese, ducks, raptors, warblers and waders. Other frequently seen birds are pelicans,
storks, herons, egrets and kingfishers. It is best to visit this park in the months of November
to March.


SARISKA NATIONAL PARK
Situated in the Aravalli Hills, this sprawling, vast landscape of 800 sq km, is home to more
than 200 species of birds. Birds which can be seen here are mainly the Wryneck
Woodpecker Babbler, White Breasted Kingfisher, Little Brown Dove, Small Minivet, Gray
Hornbill, Crested Serpent Eagle, Black and Red Headed Bunting, Golden Oriole, Great
Gray Shrike, Pale Harrier and the Tailor Bird, an Old World Warbler.

CORBETT NATIONAL PARK
Bird-watchers can view approximately 600 species of birds here. Spread on an area of 600
sq km, this park is located in the western Himalayas in Uttranchal. In the winter months,  
visitors can see many migratory birds such as Bareheaded goose, snipe, gull, duck, grepe,
graylag, wagtail and sandpiper. Raptors, darters, egrets, the black-necked stork and
cormorants are also commonly seen here.


SUNDERBANS NATIONAL PARK
This national park is 72km away from Kolkata.  Encompassing over 4,264 sq km, this
renowned UNESCO World Heritage Site is known for its impenetrable mangrove forest and
biodiversity. A bird sanctuary at Sajnekhali provides habitat to several variety of birds like
Heron, Egret, Tern, Brahmini kite, White ibis, Cotton Teal, Curlew and other countless birds.


KAZIRANGA NATIONAL PARK
This park is situated on the bank of the River Brahmaputra in Assam. It is an area of 430 sq
km covered with thick forest and lakes making it a bird paradise. More than 100 species of
migratory birds can be watched, like Pallas's fish eagle, black necked stork, lesser adjutant
stork, grey pelican, Bengal floricans, grey peacock-pheasant, and the green imperial
pigeon. November to March is the best time to see these birds.


WHAT TO BRING
A pair of binoculars to have a clear view of birds is a must. Many birdwatchers recommend
8 x 36 or 8 x 40 Porro prism binoculars made by Pentax, Nikon, or Bushnell.

Wear neutral colors.

A notebook to record your sightings.

An illustrated field guide to birds

Cameras must not be forgotten at any cost.

Food, plenty of water, and sunscreen or hat.

Tour operators can also provide guides who are knowledgeable about the local species.
