In earlier times the houseboat or
ketuvallom was the local mode of
transportation used to carry coconuts,
rice, and other commodities from
isolated villages in the interior to the
coast. When more modern forms of
transport replaced these 80 foot long
boats, many fell into a deplorable state
of decay and disrepair. Fortunately,
many have been saved and refurbished
to their former glory.
Many people are attracted to Kashmir by the prospect of
staying on one of the cedar-paneled, fancifully-named
houseboats permanently moored on Srinagar’s picturesque
lakes. Like hotels, houseboats vary in the degree of luxury
and have been graded by the Department of Tourism.
Some overlook lotus gardens, some look out over floating
vegetable markets while others face the main road. All
houseboats, regardless of their category, have highly
personalized service. Each comes with a cook who can
prepare for you a meal of the local Kashmiri cuisine, as well
as Continental, Chinese, and Indian fare.

A standard houseboat has a balcony in the front on which you can relax and watch this unique floating
community, a sitting room, dining room, kitchen, and at least 2 bedrooms, each with its own attached
bathroom. To travel from your houseboat to town a shikara, the so-called Kashmiri gondola, can ferry
you to shore at no additional cost to you. What better way to experience first-hand Kashmir’s
hospitality. Book It
Today, you can cruise through Kerala’s backwaters in one of these beauties of a
