ITINERARY

DAY 1:  CHENNAI
You are met on arrival in Chennai and transferred to your hotel.  Overnight is in Chennai

DAY 2:  CHENNAI
After breakfast, you will depart for a comprehensive tour of this vibrant city.  Chennai has
long attracted the finest writers, artists, Tamil film makers and thinkers, and has an
abundance of crafts traditions.  You can also visit its significant temples and museums.  
Overnight stay in Chennai.

DAY 3:  CHENNAI - KANCHIPURAM - MAHABALIPURAM
After breakfast you will be driven to Mahabalipuram and Kanchipuram.  Kanchipuram is an
ancient city with a history of significant Buddhist scholarship, as well as noticeable Hindu
and Jain influences.  It became the capital of the Pallava arts scene  On arrival in
Mahabalipuram, you will check into your hotel.

DAY 4:  MAHABALIPURAM
A full day's sightseeing is ahead of you.  Mahabalipuram is famous for its beautiful and
romantic shore temple. Overnight is in Mahabalipuram.


DAY 5:  MAHABALIPURAM - CHIDAMBARAM
After breakfast at the hotel you will be driven to Chidambaram.  On arrival you will be
transferred to your hotel.  Overnight is in Chidambaram.

DAY 6:  CHIDAMBARAM - TANJORE
Breakfast at the hotel is followed by a half day city tour of Chidambaram.  You can explore
the famous dancing Shiva  temple, the Nataraja Temple complex.  It has four gopurams or
tall pyramidal archways with beautifully sculpted Hindu icons, and is filled with breathtaking
examples of Chola artistry.  Afterwards, you will be driven to Tanjore where you will settle in
for the night.

DAY 7:  TANJORE - TRICHY
We eat breakfast at the hotel and then depart for our morning tour of Tanjore, a UNESCO
World Heritage site.   It is a fascinating and superb monument with 250 linga, and the
names of dancers, musicians and poets inscribed on the walls.  The inner sanctum houses
a 4m high lingam while above it is a 13 story tower reaching 66m up into the sky.  The
palace complex is a beautifully kept labyrinth of halls, corridors and courtyards housing the
Royal Palace Museum.  You will then set off on the drive to Trichy.  On arrival you will check
into your hotel.

DAY 8:  TRICHY -  MADURAI
You will embard on a comprehensive tour of Trichy (Tiruchirappalli).    In the late afternoon,
you start your drive to Madurai. On arrival, you will check into your hotel for dinner and rest.

DAY 9:  MADURAI - PERIYAR NATIONAL PARK
Breakfast is followed by a visit to the Sri Meenakshi Temple in the old town of Madurai.  A
somewhat all-encompassing and eclectic work of Dravidian architecture, it is adorned from
head to foot with gopurams in a head-whirling collage of rainbow colored images of gods
and goddesses, animals and mythical creatures. The drive to Periyar follows.  On arrival you
will check in to your hotel for the night.

DAY 10:  PERIYAR NATIONAL PARK - KOTTAYAM - ALLEPPEY
Here you will enjoy a refreshing safari around the beautiful lake and the thick jungle forest
spotting everything from bison, antelope and boar to elephant, langur and, if you are lucky,
tiger.   You will then drive to nearby Kottayam to catch the relaxing boat ride to Alleppey.  
Travelling along Kerala's winding backwaters is not to be missed.  The lagoons, tiny canals
and rivers stretch inland from the coast and boats drift lazily on waters fringed by palms
where tradesmen pile high their coconut and cashew produce.  On arrival at Alleppey, you
will check into your hotel.

DAY 11:  ALLEPPEY- KOVALAM
Alleppey is built on a network of backwater canals shaded by coconut trees and trading
houses which you can explore.   In the afternoon you will depart for Kovalam, where you will
check into your hotel.

DAY 12:  KOVALAM
After breakfast you will head out to explore the tropical delights of Kovalam. Spend  time
relaxing on the warm sands and indulging in some remarkable seafood.  Kovalam is
traditionally a fishing village, and Kerala's reputation for having fine seafood lives on here.
Overnight is in Kovalam.

DAY 13:  KOVALAM - TRIVANDRUM
In the afternoon  you will depart for Trivandrum, also known as Thiruvananthapuram.  On
arrival you will check into your hotel.

DAY 14:  TRIVANDRUM
After breakfast you will depart for a city tour of Trivandrum.  Visit the Sri
Padmanabhaswamy Temple, a large, 260 year old temple in which the deity Padmanabha
reclines on the sacred serpent within the inner sanctum.  Nearby, the Palace Museum
exhibits a fine display on the theme of the Chinese and European spice trade.  It is within
the two hundred year old Travancore Maharaja's Palace, and is a fine example of distinctive
Keralan architecture. You are transferred to the airport or station for your onward journey.
